How much space do I need for a home gym?

If you’ve read about how to build a home gym on a budget and are feeling pumped about the idea of building your own gym then you already know that your space can be as little as just a corner of a bedroom of living room.

Building a corner home gym space

The first thing to consider when planning your workout space is your goals, what do you want to achieve? Are you looking to pack on some serious muscle and bulk up? Or are you just looking to add a little strength and tone and definition?

If your looking to bulk up or just tone your going to need a selection of weights. Some exercises you are going to need heavy weights while for others you need just the lighter weights. This is why the single most useful equipment for a small gym space is a pair of adjustable dumbbells.

Adjustable Dumbbells

Adjustable dumbbells are a very clever way to pack the equivalent of a full rack of weights into one small space that could fit into the corner of almost any room. From just one press of a button you can transform a 10kg dumbell into a 30kg dumbbell. It’s so fast and convenient that you can adjust your weights mid workout without loosing any time.

The second thing you are going to need is a good quality adjustable bench. With a good bench and a set of dumbbells you’re going to be able to hit all of your muscles from lots of different angles using various versions of different exercises. This is the key to big muscle development.

Pull up bar

The third thing you are going to need is a good quality door frame pull up bar. The door frame pull up bar is a really handy piece of equipment that allows you to safely do pull ups at home. These are universal so it’s easy to pick up one to fit your door. It’s very important to make sure you buy the right one though because the wrong one could be dangerous.

Can I get big using just dumbbells?

Absolutely yes! Dumbbells are my favourite when it comes to bodybuilding. They are so versatile. There are hundreds of exercises you can do with just your trusty pair of dumbbells and a bench. When I first started out all I had was a pair of the bodymax adjustable dumbbells and a bench in my small spare room. I pretty much used just these two pieces of equipment to make my entire transformation and even though I have lot’s more equipment now I still find myself using just my bench and dumbbells around 80% of the time. I still have a long way to go but my bench and dumbbells are going to be with me almost every step of the way.

This (the picture below) was my first ever home gym setup. I did all my workouts using my trusty pair of adjustable dumbbells and still use the same pair every workout today.
