Olympic and standard weights, which one is right for you? When it comes to a comparison contest olympic weights always come out on top. Although olympic weights can be a little more expensive when purchased going down the olympic route can save you more money in the long run. If for example you build up a collection of standard weights then your decide it’s time to upgrade to the more durable and higher quality olympic bar then you’re not going to easily be able to use your old weights with your new bar. You can get little sleeves to mix the two but it’s a lot easier to use olympic weights on a standard bar than it is standard weights on an olympic bar.

The most obvious difference between the olympic and standard weights in the center hole size. Olympic plates have a 2 inch hole while the standard plates have a much smaller 1 inch hole.

With all of this in mind I recommend skipping the standard weights and going straight to the olympic plates to save money in the long run. However if you can’t afford the extra money the standard bars and weights are still a good choice and won’t really hold you back unless your looking to lift some seriously heavy weight.
